MonitorMix & IEM User Guide

This guide is intended to help your worship team better understand the their in-ear mix, as well as make the MonitorMix interface more user friendly!
MonitorMix only allows 10 simultaneous device connections. If you are having trouble connecting, there could simply be too many people attempting to connect at once

Terms to Know

General Abbreviations & Acronyms

  • IEM - In-Ear Monitor
  • i-xxx = IEM Double Patch. See  This Section⁠  for more details
  • Example = i-EG 1
  • xxx-L / xxx-R = Stereo Channel (an instrument or source with a Left and a Right signal path)
  • Example = EG 1-L
  • It is common for only the right side of a stereo pair is named with this abbreviation to save space (Keys & Keys-R)
  • VOX, VX = Vocal
  • Drums
  • Kick I, K IN = mic inside of kickdrum
  • Kick O, K Out = mic outside of kickdrum
  • SN, SNR, S = Snare
  • Snare T, S TOP = Top Mic
  • Snare B, S BOT = Bottom Mic
  • T1, T2, etc. = Toms
  • Hat = Hihat mic
  • OHs = Overhead mics (captures the cymbals/an overall sound of the drums)
  • SPD = Roland SPD-SX Drum Pad
  • Tracks
  • TRAX / TRX = Backing Tracks (synths, keys, guitars, etc)
  • PERC = Percussion Tracks
  • BGVs = Background Vocal Tracks
  • AUX = Auxiliary, can refer to a single track split out from the TRAX channel (Bass, acoustic, etc.)
  • AG, EG = Acoustic Guitar/Electric Guitar
  • Resi = The preaching stream sent from Arden
  • FOH = Front of House (main audio console)
  • Send Types
  • Pre-Fade = A source sent before the fader on the FOH console (volume changes made by FOH console are not heard in the in-ears)
  • Post-Fade = A source sent after the fader FOH console (volume changes are heard in the in-ears)
  • Talkback Types
  • MD-TB = Music Director Talkback
  • WL-TB = Worship Leader Talkback (triggered by footpedal such as Hotshot or Radial JR1 pedal)
  • FOH-TB = Front of House Talkback
  • LD-TB = Lighting Director Talkback
  • Effects Types
  • Verb, VRB = Reverb/Echo
  • DLY, V DLY = Vocal Delay
  • V VERB = Vocal Reverb
  • D VERB = Drum Reverb
  • S VERB = Snare Reverb
  • B VERB = Band Reverb
  • HH = Handheld mic
  • HS = Headset mic


Connecting to Your Pack

Connect to Your Campus Audio Network

  • Look for a wifi network titled either "Production Control" or "ARD WC Monitors" and enter the password
  • There should be a sheet at your campus with the password and exact network name. When in doubt, ask your campus worship director
  • It is okay if the "No Internet Connection" message appears. This will not affect your connection to the audio console


Connect vs. Resume

  • When connecting to the Monitor Console network first thing on a Sunday or Wednesday, be sure to hit Connect and not Resume.
Resume will always revert back to the last mix you were connected to, which may belong to a different pack from a previous Sunday. Once you have connected to the correct mix, you can use Resume for the rest of the morning
Refer to PCO or your Campus Worship Director to determine which mic/pack belong to you, then connect to the corresponding mix


How to make MonitorMix easier to navigate

Hide Unused Channels

  • The Hide Unused Channels button is a quick way to hide channels on MonitorMix to help prevent excessive scrolling to find the channels you need
This only applies to channels that are turned off or turned all the way down, not channels that are unnamed. To turn a channel off, hold down on the channel name until it is greyed out


Personal Group and Order

  • Another way to clean up the appearance of MonitorMix is by using the Personal Group and Order option
  • A Personal Group and Order has two main purposes:
  • To rearrange the order the channels appear on your MonitorMix app.
  • To consolidate a group of channels (ie, Drums, Tracks, etc) in a single folder
  • These can be helpful for rearranging MonitorMix to bring your most used channels closer to the front, without the need to scroll endlessly to find them
The Personal Group and Order applies to the device in which you apply it on only, not the IEM Mix as a whole. If you reconnect at a later time on a different device, even to the same IEM Mix, your Personal Group and Order does not transfer.
  • The grouping of channels will be saved to the preferences of your device only, not your specific pack
  • Your phone/tablet will remember the groups you previously created the next time you connect to any pack
  • This means that if you often change packs between weeks you serve, you may have to set up your configuration a few times before it is remembered everywhere


Sharing a Configuration

  • A Personal Group and Order configuration can be shared between members of your campus via the Share icon on the Personal Group and Order page
  • Once the file has been shared, the recipient should receive a file titled "GroupInfo.xml"
  • After finding the Share on the file, choose MonitorMix in the "Open with..." dialog box
This .xml file is handled differently between iPhones and Android phones. iPhones are able to open the file directly from the Messages app, but Androids must first save the file to downloads before opening


IEM Double Patches

What are they and what do I do with them?

  • You have probably come across channels named i-Vox 1, i-EG 1-L, or something similar. What does this mean?
  • IEM Double Patch channels are duplicate inputs that allows EQ/processing changes specifically for the IEMs.
  • If you see 2 sources with both a normal name and the i-xxx name, you should only be using the Double Patch. On DM7 consoles, this channel should be colored white
  • If there is no double patch, just use the normal channel
  • The double patch channels vary per campus, but generally include:
  • Vocal Mics
  • Electric and Acoustic Guitars
  • Keys
  • Drums, Bass, and Tracks do not have double patches

Disable Channel On/Off

  • If you want to completely turn off the ability to accidentally mute channels, head to the settings and enable the Disable Channel On/Off setting

Disable Fader Lock by Hold

  • Sometimes while trying to make minor adjustments in your mix, you can accidentally lock a fader. While this can be helpful for always keeping a certain channel at the same level, it can also be frustrating. Head to settings and turn on the Disable Fader Lock by Hold feature


Troubleshooting 101

Can't hear what you need to hear? Check these things first:

Where Do I Put The Volume?

  • A good IEM mix is centered around 2 main principles: Balance and Headroom
  • Balance means that all sources important to you (ie. Click/Guide, your own mic, etc.) are at comfortable and accessible levels
  • Headroom means that you have adequate space on the fader or volume knob to adjust up or down. These include your pack volume, IEM mix volume, and channel volumes. If one of these levels is maxed out and another is very low, you have not achieved headroom
It is always a good idea to start with your pack volume around halfway and your mix fader at the 0 mark, around 3/4 of the way up (this is called unity). From there, you can adjust your channel faders accordingly


Everything Sounds "Like I'm in a Tunnel"

  • It could be a Reverb FX being sent to your IEMs. Ensure this FX is off, or at a comfortable level.
  • If what you're hearing sounds like lots of drums, ensure the Overhead mics are off, or at a comfortable level.
  • It could also be general room noise being picked up by your mic and others. Adjust your mix to give yourself more headroom


"I Can't Hear Anything!"

  • Ensure that your in-ears are fully plugged in and that your pack is on. You should see both a green light and a blue light on the pack. If either of those are off, please refer to your Campus Worship Director or contact the Central Production Team
  • Check to make sure that you didn't bypass the output of your mix. It is possible to accidentally hold down the button with your thumb while holding your phone, which will turn off the main output

Using One In-Ear

  • If you only have one in-ear in, check to see if a channel is panned to only one side
It is highly recommended that you do not use only one in-ear while on stage.  This interview  with Dr. Michael Santucci (Doctorate of Arts, Audiology; Illinois State University) explains the risk of permanent hearing damage while being on stage without proper hearing protection.
